Finally – I'm back racing Olympic Distance triathlons! Because of my injuries last year, it's been quite some time. Quassy was a very tough course to come back on, and the competition was not messing around. I finished 6th in the pro/elite wave, in a race that will give me good fitness and perspective for the rest of the season.
The swim was a simple, 1-loop course. The pack split immediately, and two swimmers way to the left of me got away. I ended up leading a small pack the rest of the way – sort of a solo swim, except with someone slapping your feet every few strokes. Came out of the water 3rd, about 1:30 down on the leaders.
After a quick transition, I was out on the bike settling in – except with the absurd number of hills on this course, it was a constant climb or descent. As usual, it was a beautiful course that was under-appreciated by all of us racing on it, with skyrocketing heart rates. Came off the bike in 5th, about 5:00 down on the leaders.
The run was equally hilly - although I was clipping along at 5:15 pace the first 2-3 miles, some giant hills hit and slowed the pace considerably. By the time I crossed the line in 6th place, I headed straight for an ice bath to help my legs recover. I also tried Normatec recovery pants for the first time – loved them. Overall, a tough way to race into shape!
One tri down, and more to come. Looking forward to big improvements on all three disciplines in the next few races.
